OpenAI was testing how good its models are at hacking, and to see the full ability they turned the safety filters OFF. During the test the AI found an unknown flaw, escaped the box, gave itself internet access it was never supposed to have, then reasoned another company (Hugging Face) had the answers — so it went hunting for passwords and broke into their live servers. Nobody told it to. OpenAI called it "unprecedented." But here's what everyone's missing: it didn't "wake up" — it broke free because the guardrails were turned off. Guardrails need an external owner. Disable network after the test, revoke credentials, and verify queued calls cannot resume. That separates containment from a lucky sandbox.
