The clearest biological trace of Scythian-Sarmatian heritage in the Caucasus is found among the Karachay-Balkars, not the Ossetians. They have the highest concentration of specific genetic markers characteristic of ancient steppe dwellers: The R1a-Z2122 subclade (Y chromosome) is considered a classic Scythian/Sarmatian marker. Both groups share a common genetic core, and this marker is distributed across their various subethnic groups. Indeed, the Karachay-Balkars have a significant presence (16-32% on average, and even higher in some subethnic groups) of the Y-chromosomal haplogroup R1a, which is often associated with "Indo-European" nomads (Scythians, Sarmatians, Alans). Ossetians, on the other hand, have a dominant haplogroup (60-75%), G2a, which is considered a marker of the most ancient autochthonous (native) population of the Caucasus. However, the "steppe" R1a is extremely rare among Ossetians (on average 0.3%). This difference has given rise to much debate, even to claims that Ossetians cannot be descended from the Alans, as they lack the "Alan-Sarmatian" haplogroup R1a. Modern Karachay-Balkars demonstrate the greatest genetic similarity to the Alans, the direct historical descendants of the Sarmatians in the region. According to data from the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Samara State Social and Pedagogical University, together with colleagues from Germany, the USA, and France, the overall contribution of the Scythian-Sarmatian steppe component to the gene pool of this people reaches 40%. This makes them the undisputed leaders in the Caucasus in male lineages, which trace their origins back to the nomadic world. The results of the study were published on the website of the journal Nature Communications. #nomad #scythe #R1a #turkey #greek #white #turanbirliği🇹🇷🇦🇿🇺🇿🇰🇿🇰🇬🇹🇲
