@annikaunmasked: Visibility is not the same as representation. The privilege I’m naming here isn’t autism itself—it’s the way my whiteness, low support needs, non-visible disability, and existing platform shape how easily my voice is amplified. My experience is real, but it is one autistic experience—not the autistic experience. Please share autistic creators whose perspectives have widened yours, especially autistic creators of color, creators with higher support needs, nonspeaking/AAC users, and multiply disabled creators. Please only tag people who welcome amplification. I’ll start the list in the comments. #annikaunmasked #autism #neurodivergent #latediagnosedautistic #disabilityadvocacy

I think one piece you’re leaving out is TikTok will also prioritise attractive women. I don’t say that to take away from your content but also feel that it’s important to highlight

Sadly true I don't see many Black autistic creators on social media—or Black creators with other disabilities, for that matter—which you rightly acknowledged. It is ironic because offline I'm often the only Black disabled person in my neighborhood, and social media reflects that same lack of visibility. Unless I specifically search for "Black autistic woman," we rarely show up on my feed. While I watch and learn from everyone regardless of race or ethnicity because all experiences offer valid insight, representation is important. I respect your acknowledgement of this disparity and using your platform to speak on it.

this is awesome! appreciate the perspective. I would love to see more POC autistic creators. I also think that it would be cool to see more LSN male creators. it's a bit odd to me that the population that is typically the lowest and latest diagnosed not taking into account race (LSN women) is the most visible. I also hope to see more HSN representation that isn't only a caregivers perspective. a bit harder I know, but the online format would hopefully bridge communication access gaps?

Thank you for drawing attention to this! There are many great poc autistic content creators who speak on their experiences all the time, but you’re correct our content isn’t pushed out as much as white autistic creators

It’s a bit of a double edged sword. Visibility is not the same as representation, but can still create relatability. We relate because we’re human. Your whiteness doesn’t stop you from that, it could be the doorway many POC, like myself, go through to cherish that relatability and raise questions to seek out the answers for it. In fact, you and Ashra’s content had me constantly saying, “wait, I do that too…” a lot 🤣 That ultimately led me to seek answers and eventually get properly diagnosed after talking through things with family and friends. After following and liking y’all’s content on TikTok, but especially on Instagram, I’ve gotten recommendations for other Black autistic creators so it’s been a big help to me. Thank you for recognizing the disparity. It’s a much bigger systemic issue than any one creator, algorithms and other social biases play the biggest part, but recognizing how you can help reform or redefine the system is great help as well (:

same here, when I got both my ADHD and Autism diagnoses I was already in burnout, but without social media I would have never known what is hapoening to me, or why I am so different.

This is a first step, but the most vulnerable in the community who need the most representation are the people with autism who cannot make their own videos. You will find those people on parent accounts.
