My family fixes much of the issues with 2 changes: One, we always play with the expanded board and randomized tile placement. Two, we place starting settlements for each faction, and then roll dice to see who gets which faction. The initial placement becomes less of a skill gate then.

Settlers introduced me to board gaming...and ruined it for me. I would play with my friend group consisting of one guy who was really experienced with games and a bunch of noobs. About 30% through every single game, the noobs would stop making a good faith effort to win, and simply make a bunch of bad trades to help guarantee the experienced friend would win. It was incredibly unsportsmanlike and he was a really sore winner too. it actually ruined my friendship with all those people.

This is catan in a nutshell, you learn it, you really learn it and how to win and be competitive, you bet big on wheat and ore, then you get good, you could be the best in your friend group, or in your city, or state but eventually you play against people that are so good just like you, then it just becomes craps, there is only a few skill levels. You are a beginner, an advanced player, or you are playing craps at the casino.

The stuff you're hating on is exactly what I find frustrating about this game. I find the beginning to be so stressful because it determines how well the game will go. And then if you're in a bad position, there's no way to turn things around. You're just screwed.

yea this was my gateway too. I had every expansion. I ended up selling the stack later once I got more into heavier euros.

There are two improvements that I like playing, first is in the set up all the location cards are face down and then you play your starting pieces, then put the dice values tokens down then flip the cards so it’s more random. Second is when the robber moves you swap the desert with the resource spot.

whenever I play the game, whoever gets the "best" spot, loses unless their 2nd one was effective this is bc for whatever reason, we just dont roll the most statistically common numbers which infuriates someone and makes everyone else laugh every time I had a game where I had a number 3 and a number 11 wheat tiles and gained the title of "wheat lord" as I got a ridiculous number of wheat resources that I then traded for everything else thru a port and swept everyone else despite having traditionally horrible starting tiles

It's still great for games nights because anyone can jump in. You can help new players with their initial placement, but others will take disadvantage of them if they're competitive

when you evaluate where to place your starting settlements add all the little dots under each of the three numbers for the tiles surrounding that spot. that number is the value for that intersection. a spot with a ranking of 11 or 12 is very high and a ranking of 9 or 10 is very good. less than 8 is not so good but acceptable for gaining access to a resource that is rare on the current board. another mitigating factor is the luck of a port you can snag for a resource you can also abundantly access.
