Sean Donnelly :
You are right. It is funny, because it is rude. You take the time and the initiative to say thank you least they should do is say it properly. Ummm hmm to be in condescending.

You live in California. Come to the south and they aren’t as rude

I think it depends on where in the US. I say "no problem", "my pleasure", or "you got it" all the time

Someone :
Well “de nada” means “of nothing” which is as dismissive as “mhm” or “yea”

Or Americans will say “no problem“ instead of you’re welcome which is so impersonal

There’s something about “you’re welcome” that started to feel a combination of too formal and too much like “my time is a valuable commodity and I have made you welcome to share it.” Our culture shifted towards “no problem” as an indication that doing something for someone was not an imposition on us, sort of like “there’s no need to thank me, I lose nothing by helping you.” Then the older generations started to complain about no problem, saying it felt ungrateful and entitled, which is something of a misunderstanding of what was happening in that interaction, but it does push some of the population to seek alternatives. I think the “uh huh” or “mmhm” has been around longer than that, but I think it’s rising to prominence because of this societal dispute. It’s basically like just saying “yes,” or “of course,” as in, “of course I would do this for you, it’s not a big deal.” Just a short acknowledgment of the gratitude that doesn’t take a lot of energy or thought.

Wait… doesn’t de nada literally mean “it’s nothing”? That’s sorta what the “mmm hmm” means. It’s a non-verbal “don’t mention it”. Or “de nada”.

I don't usually say you're welcome when someone says thank you when I hold a door open or something because saying "you're welcome" would imply that I did something worth thanking me for.

We mostly say you're welcome around where I live, although sometimes I will respond "of course" or "any time" - but mostly "you're welcome".
