Your reframe, while technically logically equivalent, shifts which cards need to be checked so it will probably confuse people further. In the original question the requirement is if the card is even it must be red, it says nothing about if it is red it must be even. For both to be required you would need to say it is red if and only if it is even (or even if and only if it is red, they're equivalent). So in the original question you never have to check red because it doesn't matter if it's even or odd, but you DO have to check blue because if it is even it has failed the requirement. You also have to check 8 because if it isn't red it has also failed the requirement. You don't have to check 3 because the requirement says nothing about what color odd cards need to be. For the reframed question however, you put the 16 year old, which must be checked, in the 3 card position, which didn't originally need to be checked, and the beer, which must be checked, on the red card, which didn't originally need to be checked. I can support this by pointing out that if it was intended to mean all even cards are red AND all red cards are even, you'd have to check all the cards. Because if 3 is red, 8 is blue, blue is even, OR red is odd, it fails. Which I guess would still be a valid test (though not properly worded for first order logic), but would no longer be logically equivalent to your reframed version.

There’s not an absolute in the blue/red card problem though, it’s not ONLY even cards can be red, it was worded as an even number MUST be red but it doesn’t say ONLY even cards CAN be red. So the red card and the 8 card both need to be turned over to produce affirmative evidence for the idea.

the original question never said an odd couldn't be red. Just that an even had to be red. Odd numbers can be red or blue. So you check 8 (has to be red) and blue (can't be even)

its a good analogy but changed a task a little bit. Previously it was if even then Red. Now its if beer then over 18. So good analogy but not perfect.

- No rules govern Odd Cards, so the 3 Card is fine - Must flip over the 8 Card to verify that the other side is red. - Must flip over the Blue card to make sure the other side is not even. If the other side is even, the rule is disproven. - The rules do not require ONLY even cards to have a red back. The Red card is fine

the hypothesis is that an even numbered card must be red on the other side. this doesn’t mean that odd numbered cards can’t also be red. therefore, whatever is on the back of the red card shown or the number 3 doesn’t matter to the hypothesis. you need to turn over the 8 to make sure the other side is red, and you need to turn over the blue card to make sure that it doesn’t have an even number on the other side

8 and blue. If 8 flips into not red, it's proven wrong. If blue flips into even, it's proven wrong. But if 3 flips into red, it's irrelevant since the statement only demands a reaction from even numbers, and if red flips into an even number, it's only one data point that agrees, but doesn't mean it's a universal rule.

The wat the question is posed, odds can also be red (or any other colour), but evens must be red, so u need to flip 8 to confirm its red and blue to confirm its not even. Did I get it?

So, the answer to "which card or cards to flip over to test the idea that if a card shows an even number on one side, the other side is red" is: all of them. If it is a test, then data is what wins . For example; there could be an even number behind the blue card, or even a green side behind the 8 card. Seeing as the question mentioned "to test the idea", and didn't specify a minimum, I would flip them all.

The first one got me, because I was overthinking it. Just because even cards must be red, doesn’t mean all red cards must be even, so I only have to turn the 8 to make sure it’s red and the blue one to make sure it’s odd. I don’t care for the red or the 3, because it doesn’t matter to solve the problem. I only got to that conclusion after you rephrased it with a real word example though. I should’ve gotten it right away, considering that it’s my profession to solve abstract problems 😅

Depends on how you interpret the rules. It's either 8 and blue or 3, 8 and blue depending on if you think the rules preclude another number being on the first card which has a white background.
