@calvinthetrufflefarmer_: Black truffles are heterothallic, which means it takes two compatible mating types to make one truffle. One sits on the feeder roots, the other needs to be in the surrounding soil as spore. As an orchard matures one type tends to dominate on the roots, so you can have perfect colonisation, healthy trees, good brûlés, and still be short on truffles because half the equation quietly disappeared. That's why the spore bank gets topped up every single year and not just once at the start. Frozen truffle from harvest, blended with water, strained, then delivered into loosened soil at 100 to 150 mm depth in the outer quarter of the brûlé. Both sides of every tree.
