The German battleship Bismarck and the submarine U-556 shared a symbolic bond after U-556's commander jokingly pledged to protect Bismarck. Ironically, during Bismarck's final pursuit on 26 May 1941, U-556 was nearby and spotted the British force hunting her but had already expended all of its torpedoes and could only report their movements. The next day, Bismarck was overwhelmed and sunk after a fierce battle with the Royal Navy, leaving U-556 unable to fulfill its symbolic promise.
