@ashbg.motherhood: We have spent fifty years teaching girls they can do anything. We have celebrated their ambition, their resilience, their entry into every room that used to be closed to them. We have told them they are strong and capable and unlimited. And then we have sent them into partnerships with men who were taught none of the same things. Men who were not taught to notice. To nurture. To carry the invisible weight of a shared life. To sit with emotion rather than flee it. To show up for the unglamorous moments. To hold someone else’s needs alongside their own without it feeling like a loss of self. We raised her to do everything. We raised him to be taken care of.
10000% the biggest one I am trying to implement is making sure I create space for emotions, too many little boys are told to get back up even if they’re genuinely hurt, to stop crying even though something is genuinely upsetting. Yet we give our girls the space to feel these emotions. We can’t expect men to know how to regulate their emotions if we don’t even allow little boys to feel them!
