they’ve made a 28.4L I4, it makes 290hp but 2000ftlbs of torque

REAL REASON: because once you get past a certain size a 4 cylinder becomes too hard to balance and is very unstable at even moderate RPM. 3 liters is about the largest you can comfortably go. larger 4 cylinders of course exist but only in low reving, low RPM applications

The chevy 2.7 is bought as big as you can reasonably build. Go much bigger you'd need the best balancer and a blessing from God.

The Beast of Turin 28 liter i4, 290hp 1800ft-lbs. Each cylinder has the displacement of a 454 big block Chevy.

Isuzu makes a 5.2 L 4 cylinder diesel. It's what you see in a lot of box trucks. They aren't terrible.

so unfortunately for na motors at least there is a limit to how big the combustion camber can be before the flame cannot burn all the air fuel mix before the exhaust stroke TLDR if cylinder too big explosion not burn fast enough waste energy

3.0L naturally aspirated Inline-4. It's a smooth, steady flow of torque from 2k to redline.

Vibration! While an inline four cylinder has perfect primary balance, it suffers from secondary, higher frequency imbalance which causes vibration. It can be cancelled using a balance shaft spinning at 2x engine speed, but that increases cost and complexity. Plus valve area is horsepower, so for that large a displacement you’ll make more power with a V8. It could be done, especially if forced induction is used to make power instead of revs. A turbo big-block four would be a torque monster.
