I’m a school psychologist and was taught the same thing. But I had a parent come in and disclose that her she was worried about her son dying by suicide because her brother died by suicide. I had lost my sister to suicide 6 months earlier and we both cried. And then we made a plan to keep her son safe. It’s been 5 years, but I hope they are doing well.

My midwife and nurses all cried with me through two miscarriages. I will never forget how held and cared for I felt from that show of humanity. They also cried when my rainbow baby was born and lined up to hold them at every postpartum appointment. I am pro crying in front of patients 🖤

It’s a humanizing reaction. I’m not surprised she felt the same as you. I get your reticence but maybe it just makes the patients feel more seen? Humanity is never bad.

she probably appreciated that more than anything else really? no one is telling her going to be okay, basically saying all the cliché stuff after. sometimes crying with someone makes someone more comfortable.

The women who kept my miscarriage from taking me with them cried at the state I was in. I kept apologizing for bothering them and they made me feel like I wasn't the problem

I'm so sorry for your loss. As for the patient, sometimes medical staff (understandably so) can seem robotic and emotionless with little empathy, so maybe it was refreshing.. Probably not the right word here, but you know what I mean

Sometimes we all just need that human connection/ validation and it’s so easy to forget that when you’re in the medical field. We get lost in MRNs and Epic work flows and just use the automated portal and we loose site of the human beings behind that
