I don’t know if its always the case that Black mothers don’t have the knowledge to care for natural hair, or if hypermasculinity influenced those choices. It could also be that maintaining and styling natural hair requires time, products, and money. Economics absolutely play a role. Did parents have the financial freedom or the time to invest in that kind of maintenance? For example, someone working two jobs may not have the same ability to spend hours caring for a child’s hair or paying for specialized products as someone with more disposable income. The men you mentioned in this video were-and still are in a much higher tax bracket, so they had access to resources that many families simply didn’t.
