Led by Benito Mussolini, Italy entered the war on 10 June 1940, hoping to expand its empire and gain territory. However, the Italian military struggled in many campaigns, suffering defeats in Greece, North Africa, and East Africa. Germany was repeatedly forced to send troops to rescue Italy's campaigns. In 1943, the Allies invaded Sicily, leading to Mussolini's removal from power. Italy surrendered to the Allies on 8 September 1943, but Germany quickly occupied much of northern and central Italy, creating the Italian Social Republic under Mussolini. The country was then divided, with the Allies advancing from the south while German and Fascist forces defended the north. The fighting continued until 1945, when Germany surrendered in Italy and Mussolini was captured and killed. The war left Italy devastated, with widespread destruction, economic collapse, and hundreds of thousands of military and civilian casualties.
