This might be the least crowded National Park... 🏞️ Follow americantravelarchives for more hidden gems and bucket list adventures across the U.S. 📍 Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park – Colorado It’s hard to describe just how steep and narrow this canyon really is — the walls drop nearly 2,700 feet straight down to the Gunnison River below, and at some points, they’re so close together that sunlight only hits the bottom for minutes each day (that’s how it got its name). Standing at the rim, you can actually hear the river echoing between the cliffs. It’s raw, rugged, and feels completely untouched compared to Colorado’s busier parks. 🥾 Best Things to Do: 🌄 South Rim Drive – 12 overlooks along a 7-mile road. Favorites: Pulpit Rock, Chasm View, and Painted Wall (the tallest cliff in Colorado). 🥾 Rim Rock Trail – A 2-mile out-and-back with incredible views and wildflowers in summer. 🚗 North Rim – More remote, with dirt roads and solitude (open seasonally). 💦 Gunnison River Access – Only for experienced hikers and climbers; the descent is steep and unmarked. ✨ Pro Tips: 📅 Visit late September or early October for golden aspens surrounding the canyon. 📷 Sunrise hits the canyon walls beautifully; sunset lights up the Painted Wall. 🚗 Closest town: Montrose, about 20 minutes from the South Rim entrance. 🌿 Leave No Trace: Stay behind railings, the cliffs drop vertically with no warning. Don’t toss rocks (the canyon is deeper than it looks), and pack out every bit of trash. The ecosystem here is delicate, and even small disturbances can have big impacts. Would you stand on the edge to watch sunrise or stay for sunset over the Painted Wall?
