@sindreaarhusnarvestad: We’ve been rendering buildings at birth. Every new render freezes architecture at its cleanest moment, then asks the real building to spend the rest of its life drifting away from that image. Piranesi drew ruins. Soane commissioned his Bank of England as a future ruin before the building had even aged. Ruskin saw the marks of time as part of architecture’s beauty. Maybe we should start drawing the moss earlier. A building deserves to be imagined as something that will live.

I agree but the new buildings are so ugly the aging photos make them look better

Patina should be a design parameter. Robust materials like brass, copper, oak and natural stone weather with grace when you detail them so water and time do the finishing work. A building that ages with beauty was designed to. I’ve been building a small tool that lets you visualise how your design will age: https://patinated.ai

Architecture is long dead. Nobody has a feeling for light and proportions anymore, it's just hastily cobbled together blocks.

Everything needs maintenance. Can't design a building that doesn't age.

I’m so tired of seeing new buildings esp housing estates and blocks of flats designed like this where I live. We’re close to the sea and have damp Scottish weather. It takes 2 years tops for the materials to look rough and unkempt but not in a way that looks well lived in and more like abandoned by a canal full of shopping trolleys

There’s a similar problem in Ireland. Every single render of a new building manages to forget to include the utility boxes we seem to need. The renders are outdated on day 1

It drives me mad seeing a year old bleach white building with tears of rust. Surely they can do simulations now, knowing that it will look awful as soon as they drive off in the van

Archeological evidence from a few decades after the end of Roman rule in Britain shows a transition from urban, stone houses, to timber, thatch, and less permanent structures. I wonder if future archeologists will find the same conclusion when looking back at our time

I just had this conversation with my husband about all of the “modern” boxes popping up throughout Greece. They are beautiful only because they are pristine but the minute one flat owner decides they don’t want to paint or maintain…

Absolutely agree with this. If I were a client, I would want to see a render of it in 10 years on a grey, rainy day.
