@ourconic: A new UCSF study found something that will not surprise the women in our film. Women living with HIV are dying most often from preventable, trauma-related conditions — substance use, mental illness — not from the virus. Death certificates named HIV in 68% of cases. The providers who actually knew these women said HIV played a role in only 15%. Mental illness and substance use were each involved in 58% of deaths. Death certificates recorded them in 5% and 13%. Stigma. Isolation. Intimate partner violence. The clinicians named all of these. Not one appeared on a death certificate. This is the gap our film lives in. Dominique, Dr. Joyce, and Millicent are not defined by a diagnosis — they are living beyond the story that was written for them.
