If certifications is not your goal... Just pure knowledge the best thing is to build your router from scratch with Linux and install and configure all the components yourself. I even put wifi in my first one...

Cisco makes great stuff but, they are way overpriced. I know you are paying for brand name mostly. In their defense, they are usually set it and forget it. They just run.

Years ago I used to faulty Catalyst switches on eBay for peanuts and then would get them replaced for free under their lifetime warranty 🤣👍🏼
