There’s a concept in psychology called baseline happiness, the idea that wherever you go, you tend to return to your usual level of contentment. In other words, moving country won’t magically fix your life. And Italy is probably one of the most over romanticised places on earth. People imagine aperitivos at sunset, beautiful piazzas, long lunches with friends. They picture themselves becoming a different person the moment they arrive. The reality is less cinematic. You still bring your worries with you. Your relationship problems. Your stress. Your tendency to overwork. Your health issues. Your old habits. Italy doesn’t erase any of that. But here’s the glass half full part. Changing countries changes your environment, and environment matters. It can slow you down enough to notice how fast you’ve been living. It can make you question why you’ve spent years rushing from one thing to the next. It can remind you that happiness isn’t built on sunshine and pasta alone, but on community, purpose, health and the small rhythms of everyday life. Moving to Italy didn’t suddenly make me happier. What it did do was force me out of autopilot and give me the space to ask some bigger questions. Not “will Italy make me happy?” but “what actually does?” Because perhaps the greatest gift of moving abroad isn’t becoming someone new. It’s understanding yourself a little better. #movingtoitaly #expatinitaly #midlifereinvention #italylife #italy
