The original tale is SO metal and has reminded me of something. In middle school Composition class, we were assigned to write a fairytale in the style of a famous author and being the little fledgling goth child that I was, I wrote Snow White from the point of view of the evil queen in the style of Edgar Allan Poe. I may need to revisit that idea using the original fairy tale bc by GOD 14 year old me was onto something. 🖤

This version of Snow White I LOOVVEEDD as a kid has the poison comb/ tight lacing/ Apple 3 murder attempts! Admittedly not the darkest version possible bc it’s still for children but a little closer to the Grimm tale

You might enjoy “clever maids” it’s basically someone’s dissertation on the Grimm brothers, their lives AND the many many women they got stories from—because they were basically scholars of folklore writing down existing oral tradition. And many of the tradition bearers they got stories from were women—and we have records from the Grimms’ journals & letters about who they interviewed, when, what stories they contributed, etc—it’s not speculation. It doesn’t really go into why women were interviewed & largely the origin/tradition bearers of these stories but it is a really interesting peek into the brothers lives, writing process, & the women who helped shaped the books.
