@scott.austin.martin: One of the first things people learn about healthy communication is to use I statements. "I felt insecure." "I was scared." "I have childhood wounds." Those are not wrong. But there is a way they get weaponized. If the very first thing out of your mouth after you have hurt someone is your internal experience, your partner does not experience that as accountability. They experience it as self-preoccupation. Imagine someone says, "You shattered my trust." And your first response is, "Well, I was insecure." That may be true. But it is answering a question nobody asked. Your partner is not wondering why you did it yet. They are wondering whether you even understand what your actions did to them. Real accountability has an order. First: "I can see the devastation my choices created." Second: "Help me understand what this has been like for you." Third: "I understand how my behavior impacted your sense of safety, your trust, and the future you thought we were building." Only then do you earn the opportunity to say, "Can I share what was happening inside me?" Because now your explanation becomes context instead of competition. Healing does not begin when your pain is understood. Healing begins when your partner no longer has to compete with your pain in order for theirs to matter. #menscoach #relationships #accountability #communication

Little Liam’s Journey :
Try this with someone who assumes bad intent and demands to know why. They inevitably put you into a defensive position. This is extremely frustrating especially when you acknowledge your mistakes, validate their feelings, apologize sincerely, and then make sure you never do it again. But because the conversation started in bad faith from their assumptions, it’s unrepairable.

Context, isnt always wanted. Sometimes all we need is for our betrayer to witness our pain & sit with it. Sometimes the context ends up causing more pain in the mental, & needs to wait for a separate conversation when the betrayed isnt flooded.

It’s fun because last one wins. If I bring up the hurt I feel because what you did today after I’ve hurt you for years diminishing your capacity, undermining your support network and burning you out; all those years of injury to you don’t matter because we have to focus on how I have hurt feelings in this moment.

When someone is loyal to their feelings, they will always bend your will to favour their ease of mind. Awareness of real issues is a skill, maturity comes from this and not having to problem solve every sweeping emotion.

yes! my ex did this. I'd tell him a hurt, he would immediately explain WHY he did that, I would be supportive to him because it made sense and I loved him (and I was overly empathetic and giving), and he'd just keep doing the behavior. it was manipulation wrapped up as self-awareness, emotional intelligence. very very tricky.

ive always taken issue with "help me understand how this impacted you" because i feel like all that takes is stepping into the shoes of the person you hurt. what if they did the same thing to you? how would you feel?!

Real accountability is a shared reality that some people don’t want to be in.

This is SO well put! I experienced exactly this with / from my partner yesterday and you just gave my cognitive mind a great explanation of why I felt seen and heard by him 🙏.

At what point do you consider though that someone is acting out of bad behaviour and it’s not actually your fault?

Learning to find the healthy balance of your own experience and trying not to be self referential is a tricky line to walk. We will not be perfect at it, it’s a goal to aim at.
