It follows billionaire inventor Tony Stark, whose life changes after he is captured during a weapons demonstration in Afghanistan. Tony Stark is the brilliant CEO of Stark Industries, one of the world’s largest weapons manufacturers. While demonstrating his company’s newest missile, the Jericho, his convoy is ambushed by a terrorist group known as the Ten Rings. Tony is critically injured when shrapnel from one of his own weapons becomes lodged near his heart. The terrorists imprison Tony in a cave and order him to build them advanced missiles. Instead, he secretly teams up with fellow captive Ho Yinsen to create a crude powered suit of armor, later known as the Mark I. Yinsen sacrifices himself so Tony can escape, giving Tony enough time to power up the suit and fight his way out of captivity. After returning home, Tony announces that Stark Industries will stop manufacturing weapons, shocking investors and his business partner Obadiah Stane. Tony begins building improved suits of armor in his workshop, creating increasingly advanced prototypes before perfecting the sleek red-and-gold Mark III armor. As Tony tests the suit, he discovers the freedom of flight and decides to use the armor to stop terrorists from using Stark weapons.
