Both thongs and sandals are a type of shoe. They are completely different. Thong - material inbetween big toe. Sandal - material over toes and at the back (some times with a buckle).

Anyone who grew up watching neighbours knows thongs is what they call flip flops in Australia. Most of the western world if they said thong ‘singular’ would mean the underwear. But a pair of thongs ‘plural’ was the give away for flip flops. 🩴
