@thelocalyear: POV: you’re about to go an entire year without stepping foot in a grocery store. 👀 my year without a grocery store officially starts soon, so I placed one final Azure Standard order to stock up on things I can’t grow, raise, make myself, or realistically source from a local farmer. The goal isn’t to stockpile a year’s worth of food. It’s to see how much of what our family eats can actually come from our own 10 acres, local farms, seasonal preserving, bulk staples, and learning to make more from scratch. So… what made the final haul? 🌾 🥛 🍯 Come unbox my order with me before the challenge officially begins - and follow along because I have a feeling this year is going to teach me A LOT. ##thelocalyear##azurestandard##homesteading##growyourownfood##canning

It would be so interesting to have a list after a year of how much of everything you ended up using and what your started with. What you didn’t use or used way more then you though. Following for this journey.

You can make your own light or dark brown sugar. Take regular white sugar and add a little molasses and mix together until you get the brown sugar you're looking for.

Two things about Olive Oil, it is similar to wine in the fact that it is best if it tells you exactly where the olives come from. Then it really should be in a dark container not clear to ensure it stays good.

Make your own vanilla extract for baking with some of those vanilla beans and vodka! We did that with an azure order from December and just cracked into our first bottle. It’s great!

I used to order from them all organic food and fresh local milk. I lived in Washington state at the time. We belonged to a co op and we split orders.

Honey from your area is really great for making medicine out of because it has your local allergies inside of it and then I buy other honey for recipes.

I use their peanuts to make peanut butter; I roast them for 5 mins at 400, let them cool then put them in a blender. I add salt to taste and blend to the consistency I prefer.

It’s not that she isn’t buying anything to eat this next year. She isn’t going to buy anything from chain stores. She will go to farmers markets and buy locally. Also stocking up for the following year.

Brown sugar is regular granulated sugar and molasses. Make your own, it’s easy and you have those staples on hand.

Do you have any resources for how you find local and qualify farms to buy from? I would love to do something like this but feel like I don't even know where to start

Dumb question. Once the can is opened can you clean it and reclose it? Or are you just stacked to the brim with jars.

When you buy local fruit say for example strawberries, but want to buy enough to make a few jars of strawberry jam. Do they sell in bulk for that or is it in small little pound bags? Would one have to call to the local farmer?
