No Black artist is copying an openly racist motorcycle gang. The winged skull design existed long before the Hells Angels. During World War II, pilots, bomber crews, and military units used winged skull imagery to symbolize danger, death, courage, and aviation. These designs predate the Hells Angels, including the service of the Tuskegee Airmen’s 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group, whose Black servicemen served with distinction during World War II. Winged skull imagery also appeared in hot rod and custom culture before the Hells Angels were founded. Likewise, Black motorcycle clubs such as the East Bay Dragons and the Chosen Few, both established in 1959, wore vest-style clothing as part of their club identity. I believe those traditions would have been a more likely source of inspiration for these artists than an openly racist motorcycle club.
