Our solar system is a vast space neighborhood centered around a single massive star called the Sun. The Sun contains over ninety-nine percent of all the mass in the solar system, generating a gravitational pull so strong that it keeps eight official planets, along with dwarf planets, moons, and asteroids, locked in steady orbits around it. The four planets closest to the Sun—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars—are smaller, rocky worlds, while the outer four—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—are giant spheres composed mostly of gases and ice.
Earth stands out as the only planet in the solar system known to host liquid water and abundant life. Between Mars and Jupiter lies a wide asteroid belt filled with millions of floating space rocks, while the outer giant planets host dozens of their own moons and magnificent ring systems made of ice and dust. Beyond Neptune lies Pluto, a dwarf planet in the chilly outer reaches of our planetary system. Even with all these massive planets and moons, the vast majority of our solar system consists of cold, empty space stretching out over billions of miles.
