The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled 10 shortlisted design concepts for the next generation of euro banknotes and launched a Europe-wide public consultation, inviting citizens to share their views until 21 September 2026. The proposals are based on two themes: “European Culture” and “Rivers and Birds.” They were selected following an EU-wide design competition that attracted more than 1,200 applications from graphic designers. An independent jury of 21 experts shortlisted the final ten concepts, which are presented in this post. According to ECB President Christine Lagarde, euro banknotes are “one of the most tangible expressions of Europe,” with the new designs aiming to combine beauty and meaning while reflecting a shared European identity. The redesign is also intended to improve security, accessibility for visually impaired people, durability, and environmental sustainability through new materials and production methods. The ECB’s Governing Council is expected to select one final design proposal around the end of 2026, taking into account expert assessments, technical evaluations, and the results of public surveys. The chosen design will then undergo further development and testing before entering circulation in the coming years. Existing euro banknotes will remain valid and continue circulating alongside the new series. This marks the first complete redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002.
