As their number decreases, the body finds it increasingly difficult to produce insulin, the hormone that helps glucose enter cells and be used as an energy source. Over the past century, science has made a huge breakthrough. One of the most important achievements has been the application of biotechnology: today, genetically modified bacteria are capable of synthesizing highly purified human insulin, thanks to which millions of people worldwide have gained access to this vital protein. Development continues at an incredible pace. Modern continuous glucose monitoring systems and intelligent insulin delivery devices are becoming increasingly precise and helping to significantly better control glucose levels throughout the day. However, perhaps the most exciting discoveries still lie ahead. In many scientific laboratories, technologies for restoring insulin-producing cells, methods for protecting them, and new approaches in regenerative medicine are already under development.
