The production of palm oil harms the environment through widespread tropical deforestation and severe biodiversity loss. Because oil palm trees only thrive in tropical climates, millions of hectares of species-rich rainforests and carbon-heavy peatlands have been cleared or burned to make way for commercial plantations, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia. This large-scale destruction fractures natural ecosystems, isolating wildlife populations. It directly threatens critically endangered wildlife like the orangutan, Sumatran tiger, and Asian elephant.
