I am uniquely lucky to fully appreciate it as my father was a chief maintenance officer for the SR-71 while it was in service. I grew up hearing many many story's about the Blackbird!

One pilot was quoted as saying "We were at 85,000ft and we were fired upon, so per procedure we kicked on the burners and throttled up to outrun it. On radar we began to outrun the missile, I then looked down and made the terrifying observation that I still had 3 inches of throttle left."
