This box jellyfish was filmed drifting through open water on a Blackwater dive... reminding me why we cover up during these dives! With a body that's nearly transparent, it's easy to understand why swimmers and fish often don't see one until it's too late. Unlike most jellyfish, box jellyfish have surprisingly advanced vision. They have 24 eyes, including image-forming eyes that help them navigate around obstacles and hunt more effectively. Their tentacles are covered with thousands of specialized stinging cells used to catch prey. While some species have venom powerful enough to be dangerous to humans, many box jellyfish are much smaller and far less hazardous. It's a reminder that not every box jellyfish should be treated as equally dangerous, but they should always be respected. Beautiful to watch... just not something you want to bump into.
