In the 18th century, the city turned into an important political center, and in the middle of the 19th century it was renamed Tokyo and made the capital of the state. The city was given a talking name, which means "eastern capital" in Japanese. The 20th century caused significant damage to Tokyo: many parts were badly damaged in the year of the Great Kanto Earthquake, as well as due to aerial bombing in 1945. Now Tokyo is the foremost center of the country, its political, economic and cultural heart. Tourists all as one admit: the city is very beautiful, modern and innovative. Here the commitment to traditions and the passion of the Japanese for everything new are harmoniously combined.
