@youthpastorryan: Thanks to the National Museum of the Pacific War for letting me rummage around the incredible history they have! Here’s one of the more crazy experiments during WW2! Also correction, it was based in CA for a bit but it was Carlsbad New Mexico where the bats set a U.S. general’s car and ATC control tower on fire. Enjoy some weird history!
bat 💣s, pigeon-guided 🚀s, that evesdropping cat thing from the Cold War...any other animal-fueled wartime shenanigans the US got up to?

Between this and pigeon guided munitions, WW2 was a very innovative time

The bat bomb was projected to be 12X's more effective than other incendiary bombs. The deadliest bomb in WW2 was a incendiary bomb... They were afraid of how devastating the bomb would've been

Fun fact: had the bat-bomb successfully commenced on Japan it was projected to be deadlier than BOTH atomic bombs. Why? Because the bulk of Japanese buildings at the time were built from wood.

Japan tried something similar to my state, Oregon, turns out it's hard to start a forest fire when everything is wet 🤣🤣🤣

The guy who made them is even weirder. He wasn’t a military scientist, he was just a dentist friend of Eleanor Roosevelt with some weird views about bats. He literally thought god made them just to be bombs in WW2

I’m particularly partial to the spinning wheel of doom. Will it go straight? Will it randomly explode? Will it start spinning with such velocity that it could peel a human from 50ft away? No one knows! It’s a surprise for them and for us! 😂

Hey so fun fact, there is a children's novel that talks about this from the bat's perspective. Silverwing sceries by Kenneth Oppel.

You forgot to mention that it was a brand new military base that was burned down because they decided to do these tests (that require the bats to stay cold enough that they stay in torpor, aka, hibernation) in New Mexico, one of the states where the weather is famously really hot 😂😅😂
