Askeladd was fighting for revenge his whole life, just like how Thorfinn was. That’s why he never laughed at Thorfinn. He understood Thorfinn. But he didn’t want Thorfinn to become himself. He knew what he did wasn’t the way of doing things. But it was so late for Askeladd to go back the second he slayed his father. But he knew it wasn’t too late for Thorfinn. I love this dynamic because it shows what kind of person Askeladd is. As bad as he was, he never wanted anyone to becomes who he was. He was aware of the person he was, he accepted it. He knows he was bad and that dosent make him a monster fully. He’s horrible but I don’t need to tell him that. Thats what makes him so great. Everyone else was so unaware. Except him. He made Thorfinn aware too in a way
