The rows/columns are scalar multiples when viewed as matrix that’s why the determinant is zero. If they were not scalar multiples it would not be the correct factoring and therefore have a nonzero determinant for most values of x.

Something I learned as a teacher when I taught this was : the reason you multiply the 2 and 15 is because if those numbers were the area of each section, then the product of the diagonal areas are the same.
