@drannieobgyn: #HPV is now leading cause of oropharyngeal cancer. So this may feel extreme but I think we should do more to talk about this. All opinions are my own.
Sadly, the only way it will become routine is if it starts affecting men on a larger scale.

Fellow physician here. We made that decision for ourselves about a decade ago in our relationship. Odds are odds. I see so many hpv oral cancers. Thanks for getting the word out.

How about we all just get vaccinated and reduce the risk that way?

As a patient, what I find annoying is that I have to literally beg to have a routine pap yearly instead of every 3 years. I don’t care that I’ve never had an abnormal one, I have a family history of ovarian, uterine and colon cancer. I want that checked yearly and I don’t want to be looked at like I’m crazy for requesting it.

I hear you....but also...lets talk statistics. where does that risk rank? plane crash/shark bite/struck by lightning territory. Or being killed by medical malpractice territory?,🫣

There’s no way to test men for HPV. Dating any many (who’s not a virgin) is a risk no matter what type of sex

You’re right. It is both controversial and dumb to say this and not promote a vaccine that is 90% effective in preventing the strains that cause cancer.

I work on head and neck cancer trials. HPV can seriously give you throat and oral cavity cancer. HPV related cancers more difficult to treat as well. It's truly scary. You can get cancer from oral sex, this is true.

As an otolaryngology RN who’s worked with a plethora of oral & throat cancers, it’s shocking to me we haven’t developed more routine screening similar to a Pap smear. Visual & palpation screening doesn’t seem like enough with high risk groups.
