I work in a steel mill, but I'm just an inspector. My job is to literally sit down and watch while workers around me are in some of the most brutal heat doing exhausting labor. They work 12 hour shifts, I work for maybe 4. At first I felt awkward because I'm being paid for doing basically nothing, while these guys are doing grueling work. Then I just started being honest: "Oh, I could never do what you guys do, I'm too lazy." "I really don't like working" "Honestly, I'm soft. Couldn't handle real work" and now instead of them feeling resentment, they joke around and we chat and have a good time. I think just being genuine is something people notice and admire.

I think i remember an experiment on tv when i was a kid someone did where two people pretended to be homeless. One had a sign that said something like “im hungry” and the others sign said “for booze and drugs” and the guy that had the booze and drugs sign was given more money from people passing by.
