this is actually not true though many westerners think it’s true, the hadith says that a woman can not travel the DISTANCE of a day or a night except that she needs a mahram, meaning if she doesn’t exceed the distance of a day or a night, she doesn’t need that guardian, scholars have given the distance and it is 55 miles, a radius of 55 miles, anything that exceeds that, she needs a guardian, anything below eg anywhere from 0.1m to less than 55 miles, it is good to have one but isn’t necessary
