I gave my mom a Swarovski bracelet from Europe when I was 17. I never once saw her wear it and 10 years later she handed me a box of jewelry for me to look through of stuff she didn’t want. The bracelet was in there. I asked if she remembered where she got it and she said no and she didn’t want it. I can understand if it wasn’t her style and maybe she didn’t like it, but if my kids gave me the ugliest thing ever I would be so proud to wear it. It still makes me sad thinking about it.

Her generation was raised to use special things only occasionally so they don't get ruined.

We had secret Santa at work and I got mine. I bought all things purple because it’s her favourite colour. One day she was telling me whoever got her the presents was rude and trying to say she smells because there was a car freshener in there 😂

It’s so precious to her. It’s definitely generational.

I painted my mom's portrait and she cried saying she looked old, threw it away immediately.
Mind you, I've been to art school 🙃

Pandora bracelets are expensive and overhyped IMO. Not everyone likes charms that are constantly moving.

I miss when empathy was a thing. You are reasonable for feeling sad about this. You are not placing insurmountable expectations on your mother for just wanting her to wear a meaningful gift. I already know these comments will be a mess of hatred towards you 💀

I agree with the ppl saying it's a generational thing. My dad had wanted a film camera for a while and I got him one for his bday in May and he hasn't even taken one photo bc he's afraid of dropping or damaging it 🙃

If I may, many people “save” things they love for special occasions; especially Gen X and older. We were raised by people who were raised by survivors of The Great Depression and saving items was the rule. We had Sunday shoes, Sunday clothes, school clothes & school shoes, and we NEVER went outside to play in anything other than old/play clothes

I feel this. I bought my mom an engraved watch necklace. She even cried when she opened it. Then never wore it. It's still in the original case in her jewelry box. Always says she didn't want to lose it or break it. Older generations are weird and dont realize how hurtful ts is.

I made my mom a pair of earrings. I didn't have money for gifts so i tried to make it to her liking, even though it was just a diy we had as an option at a summer camp. She never wore it. Not once. I still get sad thinking about it because i was so proud of them.

"Hey mom, maybe you're just saving it for special occasions, but I wanted to let you know it would mean a lot to me if you wore the bracelet I bought for you. I was so excited to get it for you and I think it looks beautiful on you!"

I bought my mother one of those “Mom, tell me about your life” books that they fill out. I spent months trying to get her to do it. Told her it would mean a lot. She never filled it out and I threw it in the bin after looking at it on the kitchen table

My mom still has her first Chanel perfume that my dad bought her in the 90s. She loves the scent but has used it like 4 times since. Sometimes it’s just about keeping the item safe because they cherish it that much :)

my mum never wears her pandora bracelet because of how important it is to her and how much she loves it. she’s terrified of it breaking or losing it, so please don’t be too upset about this she could be doing the same

last summer for my mum’s birthday I did bead embroidery on a t shirt specially for her. I saw her wear it on her birthday and then not even once for a whole year. When I asked her why she doesn’t want to wear it, she said that’s because she’s scared to ruin it 🥺
