Having a period does not necessarily mean you ovulated. This is something I really want more women to understand, especially if you’re trying to conceive. You can still have a bleed without releasing an egg. This is called an anovulatory bleed. Normally after ovulation, the follicle becomes the corpus luteum and produces progesterone. If ovulation doesn’t occur, you don’t get that normal post ovulation rise in progesterone. The uterine lining can still build and eventually shed, which means you can bleed even though no egg was released. This is also why I don’t use the presence of a monthly period alone as proof that someone is ovulating. And your period tracking app predicting ovulation on day 12 or 14 doesn’t confirm it either. I like to look at the bigger picture: changes in cervical mucus, basal body temperature patterns using something like Natural Cycles or an Oura Ring, cycle changes and, when appropriate, a properly timed progesterone blood test around 7 days after ovulation. This becomes particularly important when trying to conceive, and also as we move into our late 30s and 40s. Ovulation can become less predictable during the perimenopausal transition. I’ve actually noticed this in my own cycles, with ovulation moving significantly from month to month and occasionally appearing not to occur at all. So if you’re getting a period every month but struggling to conceive, don’t automatically assume ovulation is happening exactly when your app says it is. There’s more information we can look at. If you’d like help understanding your cycle and fertility, our naturopaths at Nourishing Apothecary consult Australia-wide via Zoom. You can start with our free Find the Right Practitioner discovery call. www.nourishingapothecary.com #fertility #ovulation #tryingforababy #womenshealth #perimenopause
