@explaining.madicals: explaining.medicals The epiglottis is a small, leaf-shaped flap of elastic cartilage located at the entrance to your larynx (voice box). Although it's tiny, it plays a crucial role in protecting your lungs every time you swallow. When you eat or drink, your throat muscles coordinate a rapid swallowing reflex that lifts the larynx upward. At the same time, the epiglottis folds over the opening of the trachea (windpipe), helping guide food and liquids into the esophagus, which leads to the stomach. When you're breathing, the epiglottis remains upright, allowing air to flow freely into the lungs. This seamless transition between breathing and swallowing happens automatically and usually takes less than a second. If food or liquid accidentally enters the airway, the body triggers a cough reflex to help clear it and protect the lungs from aspiration. Although it works silently in the background, the epiglottis is one of the body's most important protective structures- helping you safely eat, drink, speak, and breathe thousands of times every day. #Biology #HumanBody #Epiglottis #Anatomy #MedicalScience #fyp #Chemistry
