You have agency. Start using it. One of the most dangerous things you can do right now is outsource your awareness to an algorithm. If something doesn't land on your For You Page, does that mean it didn't happen? If nobody makes a viral video explaining it, does that mean you don't need to know? If the information makes you uncomfortable, do you investigate it, or do you attack the messenger and keep scrolling? Some of y'all don't process information anymore. You consume it like entertainment. React. Comment. Argue. Scroll. Repeat. And then when something catches you off guard, the finger points everywhere except inward. That's what my little Sona Butterfield Audience Research Initiative taught me. 😂 Thank you for your unpaid participation, by the way. You told me plenty about me. I learned even more about you. Agency means you decide to look. You decide to verify. You decide to stay current. You decide what deserves more than a 30-second reaction. You decide whether you're preparing yourself or simply waiting for the next thing the algorithm decides to show you. Years ago, somebody taught me an enormous amount of what I know today. I didn't always like his delivery. Sometimes I didn't like hearing what he had to say. But discomfort didn't make the information useless. That's a skill too. Everything cannot be somebody else's fault. Everything cannot be somebody else's responsibility to explain. At some point, you have to ask: What am I doing with my own agency? Because whatever comes next, being informed after everybody else has already processed it isn't preparation. Pay attention. Ask questions. Check the source. Go looking for information instead of waiting for information to find you. The devil doesn't rob an empty house. Explore your options.
