It would be so boring if every adaptation was just the same depiction over and over again. I love it when people do something different with an established media. All that matters is if it’s done well imo.

He frequently tries to "elevate" his genre movies in a way that almost shows an embarrassment or insecurity for the source material of his adaptations. I think he's scared of colour and vibrancy and challenging his own style

Is Zendaya even playing Athena? Her character is indistinguishable from a character being haunted by a memory and it’s pretty heavily implied at the end that that’s what she is. She offers no great assistance or insight. She doesn’t reveal anything unknown to Odysseus

That missing aspect throughout of Odysseus being cunning BUT ALSO reckless will do generational damage to a general understanding of his character in pop culture. I always liked the idea that the story he tells Eumaeus is the only truth he tells.

odysseus just didn't feel like odysseus at all. it felt like nolan just HAD to push his "man haunted by war" character trope to the point where it erased all of the traits that made odysseus enjoyable to follow

I’ve always said dark knight is an amaazing Nolan film but I do not care for it as a Batman film. Batman himself is the worst part of that movie

He hates whimsy
He's a genre director for people who hate genre fiction

someone said it in another comment section. 'Nolans research extends to a 2 hour youtube lore video' and...its true...like his adaptations while enjoyable, are very surface level adaptions which he uses to as vehicles to put out his own ideas.

I have been feeling this about Nolan since The Dark Knight. He doesn't adapt stories he loves, he mutes stories other people love.

Like you said, the Nobody story is probably THE defining moment for Odysseus. It tells you everything you need to know about him. Removing it tells you what you need to know about Nolan’s interest in the character as written

The dark knight are still comic book films but are too embarrassed to be superhero films. The Batman is still realistic maybe as much as The dark Knight but the Batman is trying to be a superhero film (both masterpieces still)

The Oddyssey is a phenomenon and he managed to make to unexceptionally boring.. I was very disappointed by the drabness to it, and the yanky accents also didnt help.

I think as an auteur Nolan has a very narrow creative approach at times where his films almost all contain very similar narratives and themes at their heart, and I think he bends source material to fit that story no matter whether it’s accurate to the original idea or not.Because of that I think Nolan has totally perfected ‘his film’ which is why people love the Dark Knight trilogy and the Odyssey, but as adaptations, they often leave a lot to be desired.

To be fair, almost everyone in Hollywood seems to think they can improve whatever they’re adapting. I think it’s driven by ego.

It’s always been one of my biggest complaints about Nolan and people raving about him. He makes good movies, but he writes the story he wants, ignoring and overriding the genres he’s making them in. TDK is a good movie, but not a good Batman/comic book movie, interstellar looks like a sci-fi movie, but it’s just him writing a family/grief movie wearing the skin of a sci-fi movie. It’s the way he works

apparently they don't respect items they use as seen a viking ship was damaged and the non profit that has the ship has to pay for the damage that was caused

i enjoyed the Odyssey but as usual it is a dark, gritty, realistic depiction. which is not what I want for greek mythology. there's a real lack of vibrancy and colour. I would have preferred something way more abstract and psychedelic. Luca Guadanino would smash this material!

Odysseus not staying with Circe removes the real obstacle to coming home of comfort. Every character seemed reduced to 1 trait.

My biggest gripe about the odyssey is that Nolan took the characters’ names, plucked what he wanted plot wise and then changed everything else to fit his agenda. Odysseus doesn’t have PSTD from Troy and he does NOT regret the Trojan horse — it’s one of his biggest feats. The Greek heroes were defined by the principle of gaining glory and leaving behind a story to tell about their prowess. What’s unique about Odysseus is that his prowess doesn’t come from his physical strength, but from his cleverness and wisdom. Not including the “nobody” scene but replacing it with Odysseus randomly and inexplicably shooting an arrow at the cyclops letting him know that they escaped even though the whole point was to sneak out doesn’t show hubris (arrogance) — it shows stupidity. In the actual story, Odysseus almost got away with sneaking from the cyclops, he was on the boat ready to sail away but he HAD to turn around and show at the cyclops that his name is ODYSSEUS and HE is the one who blinded him. Which then leads the cyclops to tell Poseidon who since that moment tormented Odysseus and tried to stop him from getting home. It’s arrogance that leads Odysseus on a 10 year journey — which is a big theme in the odyssey about many Greek heroes who survived Troy but either didn’t make it home or died when they got home (Ajax, Agamemnon, etc). Another huge theme in the odyssey is about the gods who use mortals as playthings but Nolan somehow managed to turn Athena, the GODDESS OF BATTLE AND STRATEGY, into some kind of war victim martyr that haunts Odysseus — Athena was literally whispering in his ear the whole time helping him with outsmarting people and finding a way home, not acting like some kind of PTSD ghost that is also traumatised by the Trojan war — my girl was not only an active participant in that, she was also an instigator of the war. I just don’t get what’s the point of ADAPTING a story where you misunderstand the core themes and characters. Just write your own new story if you want to tell something else.

I enjoy Nolan’s grounded takes. Not every movie needs to look Marvel-esque.

He also got rid of him being an active participant in the extra-marital relationships, because having a man cheat on his wife for 8 years does diminish the strength of the relationship he has with Penelope. And holds them both to the same standards, when we know they wouldn't have been.

the odyssey needs to be a story about pride and arrogance. from what I've heard the movie doesn't fulfill this aspect

I've just come to accept that I am in the minority group and actually don't like Nolan as a director. some of his movies are interesting (inception only one that comes to mind) but otherwise his movies are all pomp and no circumstances
