@jamielukasc: In a 2024 interview actor and artist Viola Davis recounts on her formal training - she was trained to be a white performer - the benchmark for success was white performance art, speaking to the double consciousness for scholars and researchers in higher education. I reflect on that as an African American PhD candidate - referencing works by the following: -Tiffany Younger, “‘I Am a Broken Policy’: A Critical Reflection on Whiteness and Gender Anti-Black Racism in Institutions of Higher Education and Social Services” (2024) -Akeen Modeste-James and Franklin Chilaka, “Black Gay Men in Graduate Education: A Collaborative Autoethnography of Finding Black Queer Joy” (2024) -Lisa Boivin, “ARTIST STATEMENT ON THE COVER ARTWORKLISABOIVIN” in Indigenous and Decolonizing Studies in Education: Mapping the Long View (Smith, Tuck, Yang:2019) #DecolonizeAcademia #PhDStudent #HigherEducation Thanks to @viper.vet for uploading the interview!
this is so interesting and so recognisable - I have been applying for PhDs (i'm not from the US so here it works different) and i've been focusing on decolonisation of the academic system and sources and the push back is constantly that it's just 'too difficult' and that they're choosing someone who is more satisfied with working with purely colonial sources
