I own a Boykin, so I definitely understand where you’re coming from. I think the biggest issue is that you can’t train them like most other dogs. They’re stubborn, but they’re also very soft-tempered. You have to be firm, just not in the same way you would with a Lab. Too much pressure and they’ll shut down; too little pressure and they’ll become a menace to society. They’re definitely not the right dog for everyone. They require a lot of finesse, patience, and repetition in training. That said, I absolutely love mine and wouldn’t trade him for the world.

This is Presley! She’s prob the calmest Boykin you’ll ever meet! I think I got lucky with her 😂They are the most loyal dogs too! Only complaints with a Boykin is the shedding and skin allergies!

This is Gunner, and he is the sweetest dog we have ever had—very calm, super smart. He has been raised on the farm and loves chickens, ducks, and goats. He doesn't hunt and hates guns.

I’ve raised and trained Labs and Goldens. I’ve also raised and trained Beagles. This Boykin I have and know a few other Boykins are by far the smartest, most temperamental and determined dogs. I can literally talk to mine and she knows what I mean.

I see and respect your opinion. I love my Boykin, but he can be a lot at times. But we love him nonetheless the less. It’s definitely not the dog for everyone but if you work through the tough times you will be rewarded with one of the most loving, intelligent, and driven dogs in the world.

As a former Vet tech with experience with Boykins in the clinic scene and every one of them I seen was bat shit crazy and aggressive, I always said I would never have one. My husband came to me one day and told me he had been researching the breed and he found a puppy that he wanted. I fought him on it for about 2 weeks before he talked me into it. We drove 5 hours to get this little girl and she has been one of the best dogs. Yes Boykins are hyper, head strong, and without proper training they can be aggressive. We got lucky with ours, she knows when to play, when to rest, and when its time to work. Now I doubt I will ever get another one because I will always compare it to her, and you're just never going to find another as well behaved and as good of a fit for our family. Being a vet tech apparently didn't teach me a thing because I have ended up with a German Shepherd and a Boykin 😅

If the Boykins you see are unruly it’s totally on the owners for not training the dog how to act, and not the breed. I’ve had them 30 years and my vet and staff loves all of mine.
