Just realized I never addressed the conversation that happened a few weeks after this when people started asking to get some of their vacation hours back after they were called in. ok a follow-up coming!

How hard is it, as a manager, to be like “oh hey, I know you’re going on PTO, I don’t have your X report. Can you get that to me before you leave?” But that requires being aware of things going on around you so… probably harder than I think. 🤣

a maybe not so hot. take. managers in charge of sales teams who make commission should not make commission and have their own clients. it's a conflict of interest and it prevents them from being able to manage.

If the person knows it will affect their pay, I have a hard time believing they would not make sure it was done before going on vacation.

A CEO who takes accountability, is protective of employee rights and is promising to make effective policy changes? The world truly is upside down. 😉

The manager is no different than a regular employee if he is just doing his reports and not actually managing anything else.

Reporting should be automated in 2026. A manager should be able to validate the report. If management doesn't "know the customers and contracts", this is a failure in tracking AND reporting.

Why are managers always like “I wanna be the manager but I don’t want to do any extra work” like what did you think being a manager meant?

Honestly, it’s weird that the manager has individual sales goals and clients vs their their goals being derived from their team hitting targets and supporting the staff. That’s a very strange setup

The CEO comment at the end is spot on. If people can't take vacation or be sick without worrying about getting paid if they don't go in? That's crazy! Why even offer those benefits then if folks are always on call?

What’s the purpose of having a manager if the manager is too busy to actually manage?! Absurd. Even the CEO knew it was BS.

maybe they could get the person from the Malicious Compliance story to come in and automate some of that reporting 🤔🤔🤔

How do some of these managers become managers?! Such a lack of critical thinking.

bonus bs aside, if one person's reports can hold up the entire payroll process, they've got major other issues

I'm not understanding why a manager is doing the same job as the employees.... that's not a manager.

If the employee failed to submit a report on time then that’s on them. I don’t think you call them in for it but they should’ve done it before they left on vacation. If they get paid late because they failed to submit the report then they get paid late

Why wouldn't they file the reports before they went on vacation? I have no idea how sales work so I'm not being snarky.

They need a Comptroller. Every sales job I’ve had… has needed one a floor manager for this reason. A manager that’s ONLY THERE to serve their sales people. Not client wise, but reporting, ops, readiness, liveliness and morale. It would be so helpful in a high stress high stakes role like that. And I’m in sales now wishing we had one

I mean, she should’ve finished it before vacation…? If this is a regular thing that seems like you’d plan ahead of time

I’m an accountant and this is what month end close is for. Sometimes things literally get processed at the 11th hour and it can take several days to build accurate reports and reconciliations. And if something does happen on the employee end and we need to make a retroactive correction in payroll or bonuses, that’s not an issue.
