For anyone who’s curious: the tool in the video is usually called a “油提子” (yóu tí zi, oil dipper) or “油葫芦” (yóu hú lu, oil gourd) in Chinese. What you see in the video is most likely traditionally made sesame paste (芝麻酱, zhīmajiàng), rather than peanut butter. Traditionally, sesame paste has been much more common than peanut butter in many parts of China. Nowadays, most sesame paste sold in supermarkets is industrially produced, but you can still find small shops in farmers’ markets, towns, and rural areas making it by hand or with simple machinery. Some people even bring sesame they’ve grown themselves and have the shop process it for them on the spot. As for the tool, I just searched for 油提子 on Taobao (淘宝) and 1688 and found modern versions for sale. But the small one that appears later in the video is the truly traditional kind. It’s made from the dried fruit shell of a plant called 葫芦 (húlu, bottle gourd). I personally haven’t seen one of these traditional 油提子 in more than 20 years. These days, almost all the ones I can find are made of stainless steel.
