Easily avoided by paying additional salary into your pension, these payments come out before tax (capped at a maximum of 60k per year), this means high earners (up to 200k) can reduce their taxable pay below 150k, avoiding the upper rate band entirely.

in scotland the income tax after 47k is 42% plus you have to pay 8% national insurance. so you are taxed at 50% on anything over 47k
