brazilian here! so capoeira is a lot more than just a martial art, and it actually holds racial and historical importance to black brazilians! So, back when sl4v3ry was a thing in colonial brazil, black people would gather in a circle, clapping and singing multiple songs as 2 people inside the circle did capoeira, with one of them leaving so other people could participate inside the circle as well, if you don't know what capoeira looks like, i recommend you to search it up, but essentially, this is a mix of dance and fight. During the same time period, the sl4ves would begin to create "Quilombos" this would be kind of like a small village for runaway sl4ves in the middle of the forests, however the sl4v3 own3rs didn't like it, so they would k1ll and inv4de those villages, while bringing back some of those people, many times t0rtur1ng and/or k1ll1ng them publicly. So as a strategy towards their survival they would begin to create Capoeira, making it seem like it was a dance (they never touched each other) when they were actually creating fight simulations to prepare for the inevitable combat, fortunately, the sl4v3 own3rs never thought much of it, which granted them every once in a while more time free from that life until slavery was finally abolished in 1888.
