As school starts back up soon, this is a reminder for everyone who works with children: PLEASE don’t comment on what is or isn’t in a child’s lunchbox. In this video, the lunch duty noticed one child trying to share food with another student, something schools often have rules against because of allergies and safety concerns. That part was appropriate to address. But then she noticed what was in the child’s lunch and commented that there was nothing healthy in it and that she needed to eat healthier food instead. To the adult, it may have been just a comment. To the child, it changed everything about lunch at school. You never know the reason behind what someone is eating. You don’t know if they have ARFID, sensory differences, allergies, medical conditions, anxiety, feeding challenges, or if getting that food into their lunchbox was already the result of years of hard work. If there is ever a genuine concern about a child’s nutrition or eating, that conversation belongs with the parents or caregivers, not the child. Children should never feel responsible for defending, explaining, or justifying the food they bring to school. This post is based on a real experience our family had. After a comment was made about Hannah’s lunch, she stopped eating at school entirely. She wouldn’t even open her lunch because she was scared someone would comment on it again. The impact of these moments can be so much bigger than they appear on the surface. Kids often remember the adults who made them feel safe, and they also remember the adults who made them feel ashamed. As this new school year begins, please be the adult who makes children feel safe enough to open their lunch, not afraid to. The comment you forget by the end of the day becomes the one a child carries with them for for the rest of their life. #fyp #school #children
