Chris Nolan did a film with a very specific theme. Once you no longer care for your neighbor, the stranger, the guest - you are the feared People from the Sea Once you no longer believe that hospitality is about as Godly as it gets, then civilization is lost. The rich and powerful have convinced so many that their neighbor, a stranger, a guest is taking from them to distract the attention away from the real takers. Just hope that one day you are not the neighbor, the stranger or the guest.

It’s not that the casting isn’t “Greek” it’s that it’s forcing us to have dialogue on these political narratives. Just cast the best people for the role. Leave politics out. You want $18. That’s what it cost now to see a movie at a regular screen. It better be amazing.

the modern dialogue thing is especially annoying because Homer wrote in modern dialogue. these events were 400 to 500 years old yet all the dialogue is in (then) modern Greek. the version Odysseys spoke would have been like what original Shakespeare is compared to our English today; both technically English but essentially unrecognizable. so Nolan did the exact same thing Homer did and it makes perfect sense

Helen is real to some people as an embodiment of what ppl found beautiful at that time - ancient cultures inspire fashion, self expression - art. Culture for us Europeans is important it’s what grounds us and had us survive living sometimes unchanged lives. It’s our comfort of the routines and customs and family life. It’s something someone who summarises Odyssey as “guys it’s not real” clearly has never experienced
